Long-time Yankee’s pitcher, Andy Pettitte, announced his retirement today at a news conference this morning held at the stadium.
“I’m done with baseball. I’m not going to be pitching for the Yankees every five days anymore. But I don’t like the word retired because I’m not done with work,” says Pettitte.
The Yankee’s famous lefthander began playing professional baseball with the Bronx Bombers in 1995 and has been instrumental in leading the team to clinch five World Series title.
Petite wraps up his 13 seasons with the Yankees alongside 203 wins, 1,823 strikeouts and 2,500 innings. His 19 career playoff wins remain a major league record.
The Steinbrenner family released a statement saying “Andy played with a competitive spirit that brought out the best in the teams he played for, and he exemplified this franchise’s commitment and will to win. He was an anchor for the tremendous success our team has achieved since the mid-1990s. A person and player the caliber of Andy Pettitte does not come around often, and he has earned the right to be considered among the greats that have worn the Pinstripes.”
