3rd Annual Female Flava Women’s Health Conference

THE POINT, located in the Hunts Point area of the Bronx, will be hosting the “3rd Annual Female Flava Women’s Health Conference-A Holistic Approach to Women’s Health” event this Saturday May 14, 2011.

Started a few years ago by Kellie Terry-Sepulveda, this female awareness event was created due to the lack of female support around Hunts Point section of the Bronx. What started off as honoring women in Hip-Hop soon expanded to celebrating women in the arts.

Female Flava is a women’s health conference that takes a holistic approach to women’s health and seeks to praise women with health coping skills via art. Sharon Lee De La Cruz, the program coordinator of the C.D.C.’s WOMEN’s (Where Our Minds Empower Needs) Empowerment Group, explained the importance of hosting this type of event, “Teaching and prevention methods are is very negative especially black and Latina women. We’re trying to reverse those roles by showing women how to be healthy through praise.”

Six workshops will be running simultaneously varying in topics from 11-12:30pm. Although this is a female based event, it is NOT female exclusive. Male and females in the community as well as youth groups are encouraged to attend. Registration and details of the workshops can be found here. There will also be late registration the Morning of Female Flava. The keynote address will be given by author Staceyann Chin. In addition to the workshops, there will be performances, a dance party, a live graffiti mural and more!

Yankee’s Opening Day, Jeter Milestones, Starting Lineup

Yankee’s will take on the Detroit Tigers today in Yankee Stadium (weather permitting of course). The dreary weather for today’s Opening Day doesn’t seem to have affected the morale of Bronx Bomber Fans. This season looks great for the Yankee Captain Derek Jeter as he is close to breaking a few records:

74 hits shy of 3,000, Jeter will soon be the first Yankee to join the other 27 MLB players who have reached 3,000 hits.

Having already played more games than Lou Gehrig as Yankee, Jeter is on the tails of taking Mickey Mantle’s longest pinstripe playing Yank title. Mantle holds the title at 2,401 games and Jeter catching up starting the season with 2,295 already played.

Already known for stealing bases, Jeter only needs 23 more stolen bases to become the Bronx Bombers career leading stolen base leader.

Here is the Opening Day starting lineup and batting order of the 2011 New York Yankees:

1.) Brett Gardner LF

2.) Derek Jeter SS

3.) Mark Teixeira 1B

4.) Alex Rodriguez 3B

5.) Robinson Cano 2B

6.) Nick Swisher RF

7.) Jorge Posada DH

8.) Curtis Granderson CF

9.) Russell Martin C

His wife Mary saying, “I think it was its time and what a great way for it to end.”

Freddy ‘Sez’ Goodbye

A moment of silence was held before yesterday’s Yankee game against the Texas Rangers for their beloved fan Freddy “Sez” Shuman. Passing away from a heart attack at age 85 on Sunday night, Freddy had been attending Yankee home games since 1988. “Out of the 81 home games each year, you can count the games he missed on one hand,” Chuck Frantz, a friend of Mr. Schuman’s, told The Times.

Showing off his bright marker-made signs at over 1,500 games, Freddy rallied the fans by getting people to bang on his pan with a spoon. At Gate 4, Freddy’s Yankee memorabilia were on display for fans to take pictures of and bang on in memory of Freddy.  Close by, his Yankees jacket and Modell’s hat laid next to a sign that read, “We remember long time Yankees superfan Freddy ‘Sez’ Shuman.”

These items will be up for display for the rest of the postseason and will soon find their way into the Yankee Museum. The Yankees released a statement saying “Freddy was one of the conductors that could be counted on to bring our orchestra of fans together. Freddy ‘The Fan’ Schuman was an iconic Yankees fan who brought life, youthful exuberance and cheer to Yankee Stadium.”
