A moment of silence was held before yesterday’s Yankee game against the Texas Rangers for their beloved fan Freddy “Sez” Shuman. Passing away from a heart attack at age 85 on Sunday night, Freddy had been attending Yankee home games since 1988. “Out of the 81 home games each year, you can count the games he missed on one hand,” Chuck Frantz, a friend of Mr. Schuman’s, told The Times.
Showing off his bright marker-made signs at over 1,500 games, Freddy rallied the fans by getting people to bang on his pan with a spoon. At Gate 4, Freddy’s Yankee memorabilia were on display for fans to take pictures of and bang on in memory of Freddy. Close by, his Yankees jacket and Modell’s hat laid next to a sign that read, “We remember long time Yankees superfan Freddy ‘Sez’ Shuman.”
These items will be up for display for the rest of the postseason and will soon find their way into the Yankee Museum. The Yankees released a statement saying “Freddy was one of the conductors that could be counted on to bring our orchestra of fans together. Freddy ‘The Fan’ Schuman was an iconic Yankees fan who brought life, youthful exuberance and cheer to Yankee Stadium.”
