Christina Aguilera Gets a Second Chance to Sing the Anthem’s Lyrics Right

It’s all over the news! All the more, talk shows and late night shows have feasted on the globally-televised blunder of singer Christina Aguilera. After rendering an erroneous version of the Star Spangled Banner at last Sunday’s Superbowl, the former pop sensation has received a tsunami of criticism, with the Daily News, comparing her mistake to a wardrobe malfunction, dubbing it as the warble malfunction.

The line “what so proudly we watched at the twilights last reaming,” belted by the singer one minute into the song, will be put into history books as a national mistake.  Sports Illustrated’s Joe Posnanski even suggested that one of her Grammy’s be sequestered for such musical faux pas.

The Staten Island-native, however, is being offered a redemptive ticket by her fellow New Yorkers. According to the New York Post, the Brooklyn Cyclones has announced an open invitation to Aguilera to sing at the minor league baseball team’s summer games.

“When a player makes a mistake, they usually don’t get a second shot at redemption, but with a singer, it’s a different story,” said Steve Cohen, General Manager of the Cyclones.

Whether she accepts the invitation or not, one thing remains, her one-time fumble in singing the national anthem will be remembered forever.

Staten Island Chuck: Spring is coming early!

New York’s very own groundhog, Staten Island’s Chuck, predicts an early spring. The borough’s weather prophet emerged from his cage early this morning and did not see his shadow, indicating that the winter is ending soon!

Mayor Bloomberg graced the occasion, holding the Staten Island Zoo celebrity, with gloves in his hands this time. After the pleasant discovery, the Mayor asked, “…what mayor in the world would predict a long winter?”

The old-style and superstitious weather forecast came as New Yorkers suffered its eight snow storm, adding to the already record-breaking winter streak the city has endured this season.

Chuck’s alleged cousin, world-renowned groundhog Punxsutawney Phil (or Punxsy Phil) of Pennsylvania agrees with him. As his handlers wrote on Phil’s site, “He surveyed his surroundings carefully and found that there was no shadow around, so, an early spring it will be.”

In an age of weather radars and real-time weather reports, celebrity rodents and a decades-old tradition has been deemed more trustworthy in predicting the end of the cold season.

Obama Streaker Juan Rodriguez Receives Sentencing

Staten Island has been making the news lately for three things: MTV Jersey Shore’s cast, the mountains of snow that can’t be moved, and Juan Rodriguez. Remember him? In October of last year, Rodriquez was arrested on several counts of indecent exposure, open lewdness, and disorderly conduct while at a Philadelphia democratic rally. He was hoping his stunt would make him $1 million dollars.

Alki David, the owner of Battlecam.com, offered to pay anyone a million dollars as long as they (1) Got naked, (2) Wrote Battlecam.com on their chest, (3) Shouted out Battlecam.com six times, (4) and was in ear and eye shot of President Obama all while capturing the footage on video.

The verdict is in for the 24 year old Staten Island native. Instead of receiving the million dollars for his nudity, a judge gave Rodriguez two years probation in New York. Somehow escaping the three to twenty three months in jail the prosecution was hoping for, Rodriguez summed up his actions to ABC by saying “Sometimes wacky things happen in our lives.”

Staten Islanders: Running out of room for snow!

“Soon I’ll have nowhere to put it,” says Staten-Island resident Ziggy Kuchraczyck, referring to the pile of snow in his front lawn. SILive.com reports that with almost three feet of snow falling on the NYC borough and a few more inches of snow coming this weekend, Staten Islanders are wondering where to put it all.  Residents have been talking to each other on how to find a place to put all the snow that has fallen.

The website says that companies who engage in private snow removal have begun bringing in backhoes and dump trucks, depositing the snow into semi-included spots on the property. Sanitation Department spokesperson Matthew Lipani suggests that city residents should pile the snow in their front yards and at sidewalks near the curb.

Snow melters are working night and day, hauling in big business by literally hauling in snow out of residents’ houses. Many Staten Islanders have also been persistently calling “311 to exhaustion,” mainly inquiring on when the streets will be cleared.

Yesterday, NYC 311 handled more than 250,00 phone calls, the most it has received in its history.
